Dallas Cowboys fans, I have one question for you:
ARE WE SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?!
Von Miller is coming home!
The Cowboys announced Sunday night that the future Hall of Fame pass rusher is signing a one-year deal with Dallas.
And Jerry Jones apparently woke up and said:
“You know what this defense needs? A 37-year-old man who has been terrorizing quarterbacks since some of these Cowboys players were learning how to spell ‘football.’”
I’M KIDDING!
Well… kinda.
Because let’s be honest — Von Miller is still Von Miller.
This man has 138.5 career sacks, the most among active NFL players. He has eight Pro Bowls, seven first- or second-team All-Pro selections, two Super Bowl rings and a Super Bowl MVP.
This isn’t some random veteran Jerry found sitting outside a Waffle House.
This is VON MILLER!
And now he’s coming back to Texas.
The man went to DeSoto High School, went to Texas A&M and now he’s putting on that beautiful Dallas Cowboys star.
HERE. WEEEEE. GOOOOOO!
That’s what Von posted.
And Cowboys fans immediately started acting like Jerry Jones just signed Lawrence Taylor in his prime.
Everybody calm down!
Von Miller is 37 years old!
We’re not getting 2011 Von Miller.
We’re getting 2026 Von Miller — which means instead of playing 70 snaps, he’s probably playing 35 and spending the other 35 standing on the sideline telling the young guys:
“Back when I was your age, I used to chase quarterbacks uphill… BOTH WAYS!”
But here’s where this actually gets interesting.
Dallas doesn’t need Von Miller to be the guy.
They need him to be THE VETERAN GUY.
They’ve got Rashan Gary. They’ve got Donovan Ezeiruaku. They’ve got first-round pick Malachi Lawrence. They’ve got other young pass rushers who need somebody who has actually been through the wars.
And who better than Von Miller?
This dude has been around longer than some of these players’ parents’ Wi-Fi passwords.
And let’s talk about the Jerry Jones shopping spree for a second.
First, Dallas gets Quinnen Williams.
Now they get Von Miller.
Jerry Jones went from:
“We need help on defense.”
to:
“Screw it. BRING ME EVERYBODY!”
Jerry is shopping for defensive players like he’s on the Home Shopping Network.
“BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!”
You buy one defensive lineman, you get a Hall of Fame pass rusher FREE! I LOVE IT!
And there’s another connection here that I absolutely love.
Von Miller spent part of his Denver career with Cowboys Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware.
Ware was a mentor to Miller.
Now Miller has a chance to become that same kind of mentor for Dallas’ young pass rushers.
And THAT could be one of the biggest reasons this signing makes sense.
Because Von doesn’t have to be the guy who carries the defense anymore.
He can be the guy who teaches the next generation how to get quarterbacks to start seeing ghosts.
And if Von Miller can give Dallas even half of what he gave Washington last season, when he had nine sacks, this could be a sneaky-good move.
But let’s pump the brakes before Cowboys Nation starts ordering Super Bowl tickets.
He’s 37!
We’re not expecting Von Miller to turn back into 2015 Von Miller overnight.
Although knowing Cowboys fans, by Tuesday somebody is going to photoshop him into a Cowboys uniform holding the Lombardi Trophy.
That’s what makes this signing so interesting.
It’s not about whether Von Miller is still a superstar.
It’s about whether Von Miller can become the perfect veteran piece for a defense that needs leadership, experience and somebody who knows what championship football actually feels like.
Because let’s face it:
Von Miller has been to the mountaintop.
He’s won Super Bowls.
He’s been a Super Bowl MVP.
He’s been an All-Pro.
He’s been one of the most feared pass rushers of his generation.
And now he’s going home.
Texas.
Dallas.
The Cowboys.
Jerry Jones just added another big name to the defense.
Now comes the only question that matters:
Does Von Miller have one more monster season left in that body?
Because if he does…
Cowboys fans might have just found themselves a very interesting piece to this defense.
And if he doesn’t?
Well…
Jerry Jones can always put him in the front office and let him tell everybody how to rush the quarterback.
Because apparently in Dallas…
EVERYBODY GETS A JOB!
Von Miller is home.
And Cowboys fans are officially asking the most dangerous question in football:
“WHAT IF?”
