The New York Yankees finally looked in the mirror and admitted what every Yankees fan has been screaming into their television for the last month…
“Maybe scoring two runs a game isn’t exactly a championship strategy!”
So what did Brian Cashman do?
He walked into Washington like he was shopping on Black Friday, pointed at Luis Garcia Jr., and basically said…
“Yeah… I’ll take that one.”
The Yankees pulled off one of the biggest trades of the season, landing Luis Garcia Jr. from the Nationals for four right-handed pitchers.
FOUR!
Now before Yankee fans start crying because they gave up “future stars,” let’s all be honest…
Half of you couldn’t pick Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Ben Grable or Jack Cebert out of a police lineup.
The Nationals basically received four mystery boxes.
Meanwhile, the Yankees got one of the hottest hitters in baseball.
That’s called winning the trade.
Garcia isn’t just having a good year…
The guy is absolutely launching baseballs into another ZIP code.
He’s hitting .283 with 23 home runs, 76 RBIs, an .873 OPS, and owns a ridiculous .560 slugging percentage, which ranks among the best in baseball.
Oh… and since June 1?
He’s been hitting home runs like Oprah gives away cars.
“YOU get a homer! YOU get a homer! EVERYBODY gets a homer!”
The Yankees desperately needed offense.
Aaron Judge is hurt.
Cody Bellinger is hurt.
Giancarlo Stanton is hurt.
At this point, if you have a healthy hamstring and own a Yankees hat, Aaron Boone might ask if you can hit cleanup.
Now here’s where things get hilarious…
The Yankees spent weeks searching for a RIGHT-HANDED bat…
Then traded for…
A LEFT-HANDED hitter.
Classic Yankees.
It’s like telling your wife you’re stopping for milk…
…and coming home with a jet ski.
Does it solve the original problem?
No.
Are you still excited?
Absolutely.
Garcia destroys right-handed pitching, and Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right field might as well put his picture on it now.
That porch has probably already sent him a welcome basket.
Defensively?
Well…
Let’s just say nobody is confusing Luis Garcia Jr. with a Gold Glove candidate.
Last year he made second base look like he was trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded.
But guess what?
The Yankees didn’t trade for him because of his glove.
They traded for him because this lineup has been hitting like everyone’s swinging a pool noodle.
Aaron Boone called Garcia “one of the best lefty-versus-righty hitters in baseball,” and honestly…
For once…
Boone isn’t talking about “good at-bats.”
He’s talking about actual production.
Imagine that!
Garcia joins Ben Rice to give the Yankees two of the top three slugging percentages in Major League Baseball.
Not bad for a team that recently made scoring three runs feel like climbing Mount Everest.
As for Washington…
They get pitching. Lots of pitching.
Maybe one becomes an ace.
Maybe one becomes a reliever.
Maybe one opens a car dealership in five years.
Who knows?
Prospects are baseball’s version of lottery tickets.
Sometimes you win.
Sometimes you end up with socks for Christmas.
One thing is certain…
Brian Cashman knew this offense needed CPR.
Luis Garcia Jr. isn’t Superman.
He’s not Aaron Judge.
But if he keeps hitting baseballs into orbit, Yankee fans won’t care if he plays first base, second base, designated hitter, or sells hot dogs between innings.
The Bronx needed a spark.
Cashman may have just lit the entire fuse.
Now the only question left is…
Can this offense finally wake up?
Or are Yankee fans going to keep treating every 3-2 game like it’s Game 7 of the World Series?
Because if Garcia keeps swinging like this…
The Bronx Bombers might finally start living up to the name again.
