Ladies and gentlemen, college football has officially become Judge Judy with shoulder pads!
The SEC just got together and basically said:
“If you went pro… STAY PRO!”
The SEC voted 16-0 to stop athletes who declared for the NFL, NBA or WNBA, signed professional contracts, or appeared on professional rosters from coming back to college.
And I LOVE the confidence!
Because the SEC basically walked into the room like:
“WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH! Somebody get the bouncer! The professional athletes are trying to sneak back into college!”
You can almost hear the SEC commissioner at the door:
“Excuse me, sir. You played for the Cleveland Browns.”
“Yeah, but they waived me.”
“Congratulations. You are now officially somebody else’s problem. Keep walking.”
But here’s where this gets REALLY funny.
Because while the SEC is saying:
“College sports are for college athletes!”
You’ve got coaches saying:
“Welllllll… what if that college athlete happens to be a former NFL player who can help me win?”
WAIT A MINUTE!
So he’s a professional athlete when you’re trying to make a rule…
…but he’s a student-athlete when Lane Kiffin wants him on the roster?!
COME ON!
That’s like saying:
“We don’t allow married people in this dating club… unless she’s really good-looking and available on Saturday.”
That’s the hypocrisy everybody is going to be arguing about!
Dae’Quan Wright gets waived by the Browns and suddenly LSU says:
“Hey buddy… remember college?”
Meanwhile the SEC is standing behind LSU like:
“PUT THE PHONE DOWN, LANE!”
Lane Kiffin basically has become the guy at the mall trying to buy something five minutes after the store closed.
“Come on! Just let me get ONE MORE PLAYER!”
And now the SEC says Greg Sankey has the authority to punish schools that violate the rule.
Punishments are still “to be announced.”
Which, by the way, is my favorite phrase in sports.
“Punishments to be announced.”
That’s basically the SEC saying:
“We don’t know what we’re going to do to you yet… but you’re gonna find out when you screw up!”
And here’s the bigger problem:
The courts are saying these athletes may have a path back to college.
The conferences are saying:
“NOPE!”
The NCAA is caught in the middle.
The coaches are arguing about competitive fairness.
The players are saying:
“I just want to play.”
And Errol Marks is sitting here wondering:
WHO THE HELL IS RUNNING COLLEGE SPORTS?!
Because right now it looks like everybody has a different rulebook!
The SEC has one rule.
The Big Ten has another version.
The courts are issuing injunctions.
The players are going to court.
The coaches are recruiting.
The conferences are threatening penalties.
And the NCAA is standing in the corner looking like the kid who got picked last at recess!
And let’s be honest about something else:
If you’re a high school kid watching all of this, you’re probably saying:
“So wait… I’m supposed to compete for a scholarship against a dude who already got an NFL paycheck?”
That’s the competitive-equity argument the SEC is making.
And THAT is where this gets serious.
Because if professional athletes can get cut, walk right back into college, hit the transfer portal and take somebody else’s scholarship or roster spot…
what happens to the 18-year-old kid who has been grinding his entire life to get that opportunity?
That’s not a small issue.
But here’s my problem with the SEC:
YOU CAN’T CREATE ONE RULE FOR THE PLAYERS AND ANOTHER RULE FOR THE COACHES!
If the message is:
“College sports are for college athletes,”
then fine.
STICK TO IT.
But if a former professional player is legally allowed to return to college because a court says he can…
you can’t just say:
“Well, we don’t like that ruling, so we’re making our own rule.”
That’s where this thing is headed for WAR!
And you already know what’s coming next.
The Big 12 is looking at it.
The ACC is looking at it.
Notre Dame is saying they’re opposed.
Everybody is getting in line.
Pretty soon we’re going to have College Football: The United States of Eligibility!
The SEC says one thing.
The Big Ten says another.
The courts say something else.
And somewhere, Lane Kiffin is sitting there with a calculator saying:
“Okay… how many lawyers can I fit on the payroll?”
But here’s my question for the entire college sports world:
If the courts say these athletes are eligible… WHO ACTUALLY GETS TO DECIDE WHO PLAYS?
The courts?
The NCAA?
The conferences?
The schools?
Or the coaches?
Because right now, college sports isn’t just NIL anymore.
It’s NIL, lawsuits, injunctions, transfer portals, professional contracts and conference presidents throwing chairs at each other in Birmingham!
And I’m telling you right now:
THIS STORY IS NOT OVER.
This is just the first quarter.
Because if LSU signs one of these players anyway…
if another conference creates another rule…
if another athlete goes back to court…
WE ARE GOING TO HAVE THE BIGGEST LEGAL BATTLE IN COLLEGE SPORTS SINCE NIL HIT THE BUILDING!
So I’m asking everybody watching:
IS THE SEC PROTECTING COLLEGE SPORTS… OR ARE THEY TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR OWN POWER?
Because that’s the debate.
And THAT is where I’m taking this on the show.
