The addition of star closer Ryan Helsley at the trade deadline was seen as a massive upgrade for the Mets, as he would stabilize the bullpen and form a dominant 1-2 punch with Edwin Diaz.

Unfortunately, Helsley hasn’t looked the part in Queens, as he’s recorded an 11.45 ERA, 2.45 WHIP, and four blown saves in 11 innings with his new team.

Helsley’s poor performance has led the Mets to believe that he’s tipping his pitches, which is a major red flag because he mainly throws two pitches (his fastball and slider).

This can give hitters a way to predict what pitch Helsley is throwing, which would increase the likelihood of a base hit or more!

Another reason why Helsley is struggling is because of his inability to put batters away with his pitches, as they are batting .420 off his four-seam fastball and .333 off his curveball.

Also, Helsley has given up way too many baserunners in several different situations. For example, he’s given up 27 baserunners in only 11 innings, which is jaw-dropping for one of the most dominant closers in the game.

Lastly, the Mets have tried Helsley in low-leverage and high-leverage situations, but there haven’t been any signs of improvement.

One example is when he entered a 12-4 game in Atlanta and managed to give up three runs, while another is when he entered a 3-2 game yesterday and also gave up three runs!

Overall, Ryan Helsley has been a major bust for the Mets, and he is beginning to pitch himself out of a spot in the team’s bullpen.

Fortunately, there is still time for the once-dominant closer to turn his tenure in Queens around and regain his old form!
