The Mets’ Biggest X-Factor In 2026

In sports, every team usually has three components: its best player (or position), its worst player (or position), and an X-factor. 

An X-factor is usually a player or group of players in the middle of the pack that can be very influential to a team or organization. 

For example, there’s an argument to be made that last year’s biggest X-factor for the Mets was rookie pitcher Nolan McLean. 

Going into the 2025 season, McLean was expected to start in Double-A after a tough season as a two-way player (.192 BA as a hitter, 4–10, 3.78 ERA as a pitcher). 

After dominating the minor leagues for the first four months of the season (8–5, 2.45 ERA, 127 K), the team made the call to promote him to the majors in late July. 

The star rookie continued his dominance in MLB, recording a 5–1 record with a 2.46 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while providing stability for a free-falling rotation in the late stages of the season. 

Without McLean providing a spark, it likely wouldn’t have come down to the final game against the Marlins to determine whether the team would make the playoffs. 

Heading into 2026, the Mets have several X-factors that could strongly influence the team’s success and direction throughout the season. 

Devin Williams, Mark Vientos, Kodai Senga, and Sean Manaea are all good choices for potential X-factors, but one player stands out among this group.

The Case for Luis Robert Jr.

Luis Robert Jr. has gone through a career filled with ups and downs since his MLB debut during the 2020 season. 

In 2020, Robert showed immense pop and impact for the White Sox (11 HR, 31 RBI, 9 SB). He finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting, won a Gold Glove, and helped the team clinch its first playoff berth since 2008. 

He dealt with a variety of injuries in 2021 and 2022 but was very valuable when healthy. In those two seasons combined, he recorded a .311 BA, 40 2B, 25 HR, 17 SB, and 5.9 WAR in 166 games. 

In 2023, the star outfielder put all the pieces together, staying healthy and making a consistent impact for the White Sox. 

He posted a .264 BA, 36 2B, 38 HR, 80 RBI, 20 SB, an .857 OPS, and a 130 OPS+, while making his first All-Star Game appearance, winning a Silver Slugger, and finishing 12th in AL MVP voting. 

Unfortunately, he has struggled immensely over the last two seasons, missing 114 games and hitting a paltry .223 with 28 HR and 2.8 WAR. 

In the midst of his struggles, Robert’s glove and speed have remained consistent. He stole a career-high 33 bases last season (fifth most in the AL) while providing above-average defense for the struggling White Sox. 

The stark contrast between his first four seasons and the last two could ultimately determine how successful, or how ineffective, the team’s offense will be. 

If Robert regains his earlier form and produces a 25 HR/30 SB season while staying healthy, the Mets’ lineup could become a formidable unit.

Imagine a healthy outfield featuring NL MVP candidate Juan Soto, a rejuvenated Luis Robert Jr., and star rookie Carson Benge. 

On the other hand, if he struggles to stay healthy and produces similar mediocre numbers, it could hamper the team’s defensive alignment in the outfield and eliminate him as a legitimate threat in the lineup. 

This would force Tyrone Taylor into an everyday role (which may not be ideal), while the team rotates players in right field (M.J. Melendez? Carson Benge? Mike Tauchman?). 

With the Mets, he finds himself in a highly unpredictable situation. 

Will he bounce back on a better team and regain his 2021–2023 form? 

Or will he remain the player he showed himself to be from 2024–2025? 

He could be the key to determining whether the Mets fight for first place in the NL East or sneak into a Wild Card spot in late September. 

Only time will tell.
