How Sports Betting Is Making the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL Richer… and Possibly Dumber
There was a time when sports were about heart, grit, and yelling at your TV because your coach called a timeout with one left and forgot he only had one left.
Now?
It’s about whether your backup tight end gets 2.5 receptions before halftime so your rent is covered.
Welcome to the Sports Betting Era, where fans don’t just watch games — they emotionally hedge them.
And guess what? The owners LOVE it.
They’re printing money so fast the scoreboard might start showing live odds instead of scores.
“Knicks 98 — Celtics 97 — Brunson Over 27.5 is cooked.”
The Good: Sports Betting Made Every Game Matter
Before betting:
- Tuesday night NHL game? Nobody cared.
- 3rd quarter blowout? Turn the channel.
- Backup pitcher? Bathroom break.
After betting:
- You’re screaming during Devils vs Coyotes like it’s Game 7.
- You’re watching free throws like they’re the stock market.
- You’re rooting for a garbage-time touchdown like your life depends on it. Because it does.
Suddenly:
- The NHL has viewers
- The MLB has fans watching all 9 innings
- The NBA has people caring about bench rotations
- The NFL has America emotionally invested in 3rd string running backs
Sports betting didn’t just grow the game…
It created degenerate analysts.
Everyone is suddenly:
- A math guy
- A trends guy
- A “the wind is blowing left” guy
- A “refs are from Boston” conspiracy guy
Your uncle now has a spreadsheet and thinks he’s Moneyball with a mortgage.
The Owners Are Swimming in Money
This is where it gets ridiculous.
Leagues used to say betting was dangerous.
Now?
They’re partnering with sportsbooks like it’s a group project.
Hello to our new overlords:
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- Live odds during broadcasts
- Betting ads every 12 seconds
- Halftime show sponsored by “Your Poor Financial Decisions”
Owners realized something:
Fans losing money = engagement.
And engagement = ratings.
Ratings = TV deals.
TV deals = billionaire owners buying second yachts.
We are one step away from:
“Tonight’s injury report brought to you by the Over/Under.”
Here’s Where Owners Might Get… Dumb
The money is so easy now, owners might stop caring about winning.
Think about it:
Why build a championship team…
when losing teams still drive betting?
A bad team still gives you:
- First half bets
- Player props
- Live bets
- Same game parlays
- “Will this coach be fired?” odds
You could go 20-62 and still make millions.
Owners are like:
“Why spend $200 million on players… when fans are betting on rebounds?”
This is how you get:
- Tanking disguised as “analytics”
- Load management disguised as “player health”
- Bad teams pretending they’re “rebuilding” for 12 years
Sports betting doesn’t reward good teams
It rewards games being played.
And owners know it.
The Bad: Fans Aren’t Fans Anymore
You used to root for your team.
Now you’re yelling:
“JUST MISS THE FREE THROW I NEED 219.5!”
You’re rooting AGAINST your own team.
You’re celebrating:
- meaningless yards
- empty rebounds
- garbage-time touchdowns
- meaningless power plays
You don’t care who wins.
You care if:
Your parlay survives longer than your last relationship.

The Ugly: Every Call Feels Suspicious
Before betting:
Bad call? “Refs stink.”
After betting:
Bad call?
“THIS IS RIGGED.”
“THE FIX IS IN.”
“THE REF HAS THE OVER.”
“THE LINE MOVED AT HALFTIME.”
Now every missed call looks like:
- corruption
- conspiracy
- Vegas phone call
- referee mortgage payment
Sports betting didn’t create conspiracy theories…
It turbocharged them.
The Future It’s Coming Fast
Get ready for:
- Live odds on player fatigue
- “Next turnover” bets
- Coach challenge bets
- “Will this kicker cry?” props
- Betting integrated into jerseys
- Odds on the scoreboard
- Announcers saying “bad beat” on national TV
We’re not far from:
“LeBron checks in… line just moved.”

The Real Truth
Sports betting is:
Great for:
- ratings
- engagement
- casual fans
- money
Terrible for:
- purity of sports
- fan sanity
- emotional stability
- your bank account
And owners?
They’re counting money while fans are counting missed free throws.
Sports betting didn’t ruin sports.
It turned sports into a casino with jerseys.
Owners are richer.
Fans are more invested.
Everyone thinks they’re a genius.
Everyone loses anyway.
Because remember:
The house always wins…
And now the house owns the teams.

My name is Errol Marks and I’d like to tell you why I believe I can be a major asset to your station. I’m from a small town in Long Island, NY and from a very young age I’ve always had a love for sports talk radio. Growing up, I would listen religiously to shows like Mike and the Mad Dog, Mike and Mike, and Imus in the Morning and studied what made those shows so great. I’ve made it my goal to be as influential as the hosts I grew up listening to, and with my knowledge of all major sports, enthusiastic and fearless personality, and my preparation skills, I know I can get to that level. This is an art and a medium that I’m passionate about and one that I feel can never be replaced.
What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting. I’m currently hosting New York’s Sports Loud Mouth, and you can find that show and the rest of our great shows at https://worldwidesportsradio.com/.
Our network’s content and listenership has grown significantly year to year and, in the past year, we’ve achieved 3.6 million minutes listened on our audio stream, over 29k followers on tik tok, 500k viewed on YouTube, 1.7 million downloads on Apple Podcasts, and 906,917 plays on Spotify. While we are enjoying a continued increase in growth, I feel that we can take this to a new level and a new audience with your help.
My goal since the day I started is to become the greatest and most recognizable sports radio show host in the country. I can guarantee that nobody in this industry currently has my passion, personality or ability to shape the future of sports broadcasting and entertainment like I do. If given the opportunity, I hope to further share my story and many talents with you and your station.
