Ladies and gentlemen… the Yankees finally did it.
No, they didn’t fix the bullpen.
No, Aaron Judge didn’t suddenly walk through the clubhouse healthy.
And no… Hal Steinbrenner didn’t suddenly become George Steinbrenner.
Instead, the Yankees looked Anthony Volpe dead in the eyes and basically said…
“Kid… we’re gonna need you to take a little vacation to Scranton.”
Ouch.
After Monday night’s 13-7 disaster against the Cardinals—which looked less like baseball and more like batting practice with expensive uniforms—the Yankees decided enough was enough.
Welcome to the Bronx, George Lombard Jr.
And what an entrance.
Imagine waking up Tuesday morning thinking you’re heading to Triple-A for another game… then your phone rings.
“Hey George… pack your bags.”
“Really? I’m going to New York?”
“Yep.”
“…Who’s getting sent down?”
“Anthony Volpe.”
“…Wait… WHAT?!”
That’s got to feel like showing up to Thanksgiving and Grandma tells you, “You’re sitting at the adults’ table now.”
Meanwhile, Volpe is probably wondering if Google Maps has directions back to Scranton.
Look, I like Anthony Volpe.
The kid plays hard.
He hustles.
His glove is outstanding.
But this is New York.
They don’t hand out participation trophies in the Bronx.
Since becoming the Yankees’ starting shortstop in 2023, Volpe’s bat has been quieter than a Mets fan in October.
You can’t keep hitting like your controller disconnected every other at-bat and expect to stay in the lineup forever.
Then there’s George Lombard Jr.
This kid has been on absolute fire.
Since coming back from his finger injury, he’s been spraying hits all over Triple-A like Oprah giving away cars.
“You get a single!”
“You get a double!”
“EVERYBODY GETS A BASE HIT!”
The Yankees have loved his defense for years, and now they finally believe the bat is ready too.
Brian Cashman even admitted he tried to trade for another shortstop before the deadline.
Translation?
“I called everybody… nobody answered… so let’s bring up the kid.”
Honestly… it might be the right move.
The Yankees need energy.
They need excitement.
They need someone who doesn’t look like they’re carrying a refrigerator on their shoulders every time they step into the batter’s box.
And speaking of uncomfortable…
Jasson Domínguez just got another ticket back to Scranton too.
Remember when “The Martian” was supposed to invade Major League Baseball?
Right now he’s making more trips between New York and Scranton than someone commuting on Amtrak.
One day he’s the future…
The next day he’s packing another suitcase.
At this point, his GPS probably has Yankee Stadium and Scranton set as “Home” and “Home Again.”
So now the Yankees are officially entering the George Lombard Jr. era.
Could he struggle?
Absolutely.
Could he become the next Yankees superstar?
Maybe.
But one thing is certain…
The Yankees finally admitted something fans have been screaming for months.
If what you’re doing isn’t working…
STOP DOING IT.
Now the pressure shifts to Lombard.
Welcome to New York, kid.
No pressure.
Just save the Yankees’ season.
And if that doesn’t work…
At least try to score more than seven runs when your pitchers give up thirteen.
Because after Monday night’s circus…
Even the Bronx Zoo was asking for a trade.

What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting.
