SummerSlam 2025: Review

So the first ever two night event in the history of Summerslam has concluded in Metlife stadium and man was it something. Having the biggest attendance in summerslam history over the span of two nights, with over 100,000+ fans in attendance made for some good numbers for the company. However with 13 matches overall there were definitely some downers while on the other hand some ups as well but for some reason this summerslam matches up better than this year’s Wrestlemania which is somewhat alarming. On the other hand the event served up decently well and wasn’t a bad watch. Therefore here are some good and bads leading into the further weeks to come.

To start off with the first night of the event, much of what was expected came to fruition. We saw Tiffany Stratton retain the Women’s championship against a pretty inexperienced in ring talent such as Jade Cargill continuing her reign as champion, however a pretty enjoyable match in Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair was deemed worthy of the best women’s match of the night as Flair and Bliss took home the women’s tag titles. Then Roman Reigns and his cousin Jey Uso won in a questionable decision to put over Bro son Reed and Bron Breakker then we witnessed Drew Mcintyre and Logan Paul pick up a win against Randy orton and Jelly Roll in a somewhat entertaining celebrity match. Meanwhile the biggest event of the night being the Main Event against world heavyweight champion Gunther taking on CM Punk in a great bout for CM Punk to win his first world title in over 10 years. All of that lasted 5 minutes to then see his biggest current rival Seth Rollins come swooping in to cash in and steal the title similar to the conclusion to his Wrestlemania 31 finish which saw him steal the world title in similar fashion putting a spoil to CM Punks victory to cap of night 1 (which I predicted in my last WWE article)

Going forward now to night 2 saw what I would say an increase in match quality starting off with Naomi retaining her women’s world title against Iyo Sky and Rhea Rhipley and while the match was more highlighted by Iyo and Rhea and their performance overall a good match to open off the show. To follow up with that was a six way Tag Team TLC match for the tag team championships which saw the Wyatt Sicks retain, now this match did not deliver in the considering we were treated to a great fatal 4 way TLC match the week after this years mania the match was still pretty enjoyable with the overall talent. Two good in ring performers in Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria followed up in a No DQ match for the women’s intercontinental title which was not one of my favorite matchups, the story and the talent was there however it dragged on for way too long in a pretty underwhelming match which saw Lynch retain after a run in by Bayley to distract Valkyria. Then we get to the battle between two cousins of Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu. Both men being pretty talented in-ring wise I would have preferred a non run in or interference match on Sikoa’s behalf but ended up allowing him to retain. Now to the last mid card title match between Dominik Mysterio and AJ Styles which funny enough saw both wrestlers pay homage to Eddie Guerrero. The match solely served as a way to showcase Dom Mysterio’s in ring talent with someone like Styles which didn’t entirely fail as most of Dom’s title reign has been pretty entertaining.

And now for the finale of Summerslam which saw Cody Rhodes battle John Cena in a street fight, and I must say it was definitely a war to say the least. The bout was miles better than their Wrestlemania bout (featuring Travis Scott for some reason) had a lot of tough and grueling spots and showed a tough side physically and mentally between both the generational talents. And although Cena hit Cody with multiple signature moves in an attempt to allow his 17th reign to continue, it would be Rhodes being victorious this time around to regain the undisputed WWE championship. However, it does not end there as much to the surprise to most of the WWE universe the unexpected Brock Lesnar returned after a 2 year absence to give Cena his signature F5 setting the bricks for Cena vs Lesnar one last time.

Overall after 2 nights and 13 matches I have come up with the fact that this Summerslam was definitely enjoyable to watch and did deliver with most of its matches and promises kept booking wise. However, I will say that Triple H does have a lot of work and questions to answer with the future bookings of certain storyline matches going forward. And as much as I love the mania two nights now with Summerslam being spread across two days, although they did announce next year’s Summerslam to still remain as two nights I would much rather Summerslam be one night filled with at least 10 matches

As a sports broadcaster you being the individual who narrates the story behind the game, it allows viewers at home to share the same passion for the sport.
