One day after nearly two million Knicks fans transformed Lower Manhattan into the world’s largest orange-and-blue family reunion, the celebration rolled right back into the heart of New York City.

Fresh off delivering the Knicks their first NBA championship in 53 years, Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart brought “The Roommates Show” to a sold-out crowd at the Infosys Theater inside Madison Square Garden. And if you thought the parade was loud, let’s just say the MSG crowd turned the volume up to “subway brakes screeching at 2 a.m.”

The special episode, co-hosted by Matt Hillman and simulcast on ESPN, benefited the Garden of Dreams Foundation, supporting children and families in need.

But let’s be honest — while the charity was important, Knicks fans came for one thing:

Receipts.

Brunson and Hart walked onto the stage carrying the Larry O’Brien Trophy like two proud New Yorkers showing off a winning lottery ticket.

The crowd erupted.

“MVP! MVP! MVP!”

Then came special guests Karl-Anthony Towns, Deuce McBride, Carmelo Anthony, and the wives of the hosts, all receiving hero welcomes.

And then…

Stephen A. Smith walked out.

I’ve heard happier noises at the DMV.

The boos came down so hard you would’ve thought James Dolan announced ticket prices were doubling next season.

Josh Hart tried to save him.

“Are they saying ‘Deuce?'”

Nice try, Josh.

Stephen A. tried convincing everyone the boos were actually cheers.

That’s the kind of confidence you need after telling Knicks fans in 2022 that signing Jalen Brunson wasn’t the answer.

Knicks fans remember everything.

We still talk about Charles Smith getting blocked in 1993 like it happened last Tuesday.

Brunson and Hart weren’t letting Stephen A. off easy either.

“We are now sitting here with this golden trophy there to your right,” Hart said. “Can you sit here and admit you were wrong?”

After pretending his headphones suddenly stopped working, Stephen A. finally surrendered.

“I was beyond wrong.”

He apologized to Brunson, Hart, the Knicks organization, and pretty much every person wearing orange and blue from Manhattan to Montauk.

Then he reminded everyone he’s been a Knicks fan since birth.

The crowd responded with the same energy New Yorkers give a stranger trying to cut the bagel line.

Look, this is what sports are all about.

The takes.

The bad predictions.

The receipts.

And the glorious moment when the people who got it wrong have to answer for their crimes in front of 20,000 New Yorkers.

For decades, Knicks fans heard the jokes.

The dysfunction.

The bad contracts.

The coaching carousel.

The heartbreak.

Now?

Now the Knicks are champions.

Jalen Brunson is a New York legend.

Josh Hart is the city’s favorite instigator.

Leon Rose deserves his own street name.

And Stephen A. Smith finally learned the first rule of New York basketball:

Never underestimate a Villanova guard.

Because in this city, receipts don’t expire.

And if you’re wrong, Madison Square Garden will make sure you hear about it for the next 53 years.
