Sunday morning. 8:10am on the East Coast.
The last day of the Winter Olympics.
Outside in New York? The worst blizzard of the year was actively trying to relocate my house to Connecticut.
And inside?
History.
Team USA Hockey just defeated Canada to win its first Olympic gold medal since 1980 — yes, the first one since the legendary Miracle on Ice.
Now listen… I wasn’t alive to see Mike Eruzione and the boys shock the Soviet Union men’s national ice hockey team — but like every red-blooded American hockey fan, I’ve studied that team the way people study the Zapruder film.
And this team that Bill Guerin put together?
Youth.
Speed.
Heart.
And just enough swagger to walk into a gold medal game against Canada and say:
“Respectfully… we got this.”
The Bench Boss: No Herbie… But We Had Sully
No disrespect to the late great Herb Brooks — the man coached like your dad after three beers and a parking ticket.
But behind this bench?
Mike Sullivan — Stanley Cup pedigree, calm demeanor, the hockey equivalent of a guy who parallel parks first try every time.
Different styles.
Same ability to push the right buttons.
No Crosby… No Overtime Trauma 
And look… with all due love and respect to Canadian royalty…
No Sidney Crosby in the gold medal game meant:
No overtime flashbacks.
No national PTSD.
No golden goal sequel.
Just vibes.

Hellebuyck Turned Into 1980 Craig… But With WiFi
Let’s talk about Connor Hellebuyck.
Because what he did in the 3rd period should be shown in museums.
Devon Toews had an open-net chance that would’ve ended the game right there — Canada ready to celebrate, Americans ready to emotionally spiral…
And Hellebuyck stops it with the blade of his stick.
I’m not saying he became Jim Craig in that moment…
…but I checked and the Liberty Bell rang for no reason right after the save.
Save of the tournament.
Possibly save of my lifetime.
Two sets of brothers helping bring home Olympic gold is absurd:
- Jack Hughes – Game-winning OT goal
- Quinn Hughes – 8 points (ties Olympic record by a defenseman)
- Brady Tkachuk – menace to society (in a good way)
- Matthew Tkachuk – menace with slightly more WiFi
And what makes it even crazier?
I was there when three of those four got drafted. Interviewed them before the NHL fame, before the endorsements, before they could grow playoff beards without asking permission.
Now they’re Olympic gold medalists.
I’m getting old, man.

Let’s be real — this wasn’t some scrub team.
Connor McDavid looked like he was playing NHL 25 on rookie mode half the time.
And Macklin Celebrini?
Future is terrifying.
Macklin Celebrini was absolutely phenomenal all tournament — skating like his controller had turbo on it.
Canada’s goaltending was elite.
Their depth was elite.
Their talent was elite.
But on this snowy Sunday morning?
America was just a little bit more clutch.

The Moment Bigger Than Gold 
And then came the part that hit everyone right in the chest.
After the victory, the United States men’s national ice hockey team brought the kids of Johnny Gaudreau out onto the ice to celebrate during the gold medal ceremony.
That wasn’t hockey.
That was family.
Seeing his children out there on Olympic ice, surrounded by the crest their father wore with pride, sharing in the moment with the team — that’s what makes this sport different.
Gold medals shine.
But moments like that last forever.
1980 vs 2026: The Difference?
1980 beat the Soviets in the semifinals and still had to get through Finland for gold.
This?
This was for all the marbles.
USA vs Canada.
Gold on the line.
Overtime.
And this time… we finished the job in the biggest game possible.
From Lake Placid to right here in the middle of a New York blizzard…
Same result.

Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting.
