Recap of the New York Jets G & W Scrimmage

The New York Jets have just completed their Green and White scrimmage today. It wasn’t the prettiest, as there were penalties after penalties on the Jets’ offense. The Jets’ kicking is not normally as bad as it was today. They signed Nick Folk, a long-time veteran who will be entering his 18th NFL season and his second stint with the Jets. The Jets organization believed that it would be best since the only other kickers on the active roster are rookies, so bringing in Folk was mainly for experience. In his career, he has only missed 17 field goals and made 511, so he is a player who doesn’t miss very often, but today it was not like that. Folk in the scrimmage were 5/7, which was not bad at all, but he missed one kick that was around 30 yards. Throughout his career, this guy had been nailing field goals from 50+. 30 yards should be super easy if you make long kicks like that. Harrison Mevis, nicknamed “The Thiccer Kicker”, was 3/6, but you can’t expect a whole lot from a rookie who most likely won’t be starting in week 1. Folk needs to be his mentor and teach him the ways so when he retires, Mevis can be their guy.

The Jets’ defense was fantastic! Sauce Gardner, who had an off year in 2024 because his tackle numbers dropped from his rookie and second seasons, went 1 on 1 on Garrett Wilson on the first play of the scrimmage, and Sauce won it with a PBU. Garrett Wilson then got his flow and started catching more balls. I’m looking forward to seeing the season he will have because he has not had a season with less than 1,000 yards and he was doing this with a whole bunch of QBs and now he is reuniting with one of his former teammates at Ohio State in which that season they made it to the National Championship so I can’t imagine what type of feat he’ll achieve. Who knows, this might be the season where he reaches 2,000 yards.

I have to give my player of the day to Marcelino McCrary-Ball on the defensive side of things because he had a few PBU. The Jets’ defensive linemen, including Phidarian Mathis, were unstoppable, making Fields use his legs. Fields delivered two runs that went for 10+ yards, along with a 25-yard TD. The Jets’ offensive line in pass games was not great, but when it came to running, there were holes for Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis to get through. Breece Hall’s best run of the day came on a 9-yard pickup. He also had a touchdown to get his name in the books.

Mason Taylor, rookie TE out of LSU, went quiet in this one after having back to back to back days with touchdowns heading into this one. If Mason Taylor has a bad day, Jeremy Ruckert has a good one. Jeremy Ruckert didn’t have any catches, but his blocking abilities are spot on, and he was able to make a nice downfield block on one of Justin Fields’s rush touchdowns.

The one thing you do not want to see in training camp is injuries. The Jets faced two in the scrimmage first off was Kris Boyd, who was acquired during the offseason, and was taken off on a cart inside the locker room. No word whether or not he’s okay because there was no update from Coach Glenn. Just minutes before the scrimmage ended, Xavier Gipson was lying on his back in the end zone. It was so quick after that practice ended, so you couldn’t see if he needed the training staff to come over. You hate to see it because he was having a flawless connection in training camp with rookie QB Brady Cook. Quinnen Williams sat out of this one because in Friday’s practice, he injured his calf, which will have him sidelined for 1-2 weeks. They might just be taking it as a precaution because he’s been in the league for some time now, but luckily, 1-2 weeks is before week 1, so he should be back before that game unless, like the Jets, they play him in a preseason game.

I hope you all enjoyed my recap of the Jets Green and White Scrimmage that took place today (Saturday, August 2nd) at the time of writing this. I had such a great time seeing this team practicing in person, and I am so excited for the season to start. I think Aaron Glenn has completely shaped this team into a winning program. Please all follow my sports show, Talking with Tyler, on all platforms where you can get podcasts if you have not already followed. I post weekly on there, and so, now I know you all read the recap on this, but I’ll be talking about it in audio format, so stay tuned. Thank you all for reading and have a great day!

Hi my name is Tyler Sceurman I’m 14 and live in Bloomfield, NJ. When I grow up, I want to become a professional sportscaster. I have my own sports podcasts on Spotify called Talking with Tyler. I have on special guests appearances almost weekly on my show now and some of my biggest guests that I have had on in the past was a reporter from the Washington Commanders NFL team, Billy the Bat Boy who’s a baseball content creator on social media, a NEC Sports Broadcaster, etc. If you want to become a future guest on one of my shows, please reach out to me and I’ll be happy to have you on. I’m trying to make as much connections as I possibly can right now so that when I’m ready to start applying I’ll already have a good idea of where I want to start heading. I have also attended in the past and in upcoming years the Sports Broadcasting Camp at Montclair State University where I was able to gain valuable experience with all things sports broadcasting including learning how to do highlight reels, host radio/pregame shows, read teleprompters, how to prepare a few days ahead to call games, 1 on 1 interviews, etc. We also took two big trips in my time here one to the Somerset Patriots where I was able to call the game into my phone and to the Harlem Globetrotters as the camp got media passes to go in early and interview two players. After all of this, I got a wonderful opportunity through James McDaniel to do PA announcing my first real “job” outside of all of the other stuff I do announcing my towns youth football teams at Foley Field in the press box. I have done almost all grade levels but mostly 7th and 8th graders. On top of that, my town was able to host the NJSYFL All Star Game for the 8th Graders and James McDaniel once more invited me back to do the game to cap off my first season doing this.
