1. Justin Fields
The first takeaway of this game was Justin Fields, even though he was only there for one drive. He started off the drive with a handoff to Breece for 3 yards. Then a handoff to Breece for 2 yards. Then, a pass to Tyler Johnson for 6 yards for a first down. After getting the first down, Fields threw an incompletion to Garrett Wilson. But made up for it with a pass to Andrew Beck for 12 yards. Braelon Allen then finds a huge hole to rush for 14 yards. Then Fields throws another pass to Andrew Beck for a gain of 24 yards. Breece then rushes for 3 yards. Then, Fields rushes for 2 yards to make it 3rd and 5. To end the drive, Fields used his legs to run for a 13-yard touchdown, marking his first ever touchdown in a Jets uniform. In Fields first drive as a Jet, he looked great thanks to the Jets’ newly added offensive line. He completed 3 out of 4 passes for 42 yards and rushed 2 times for 14 yards. After this game, the future is looking bright for Justin Fields in a Jets uniform.
2. Jets O-line
The Jets O-line had a really good game against the Packers, especially Armand Membou. Armand Membou was great from start to finish, allowing zero pressures across 10 pass-blocking snaps. Membou completely shut down 3x Pro Bowler Kenny Clark, proving that he is a starting RT in this league. Throughout training camp, he was always having battles with Jets pass rusher Will McDonald. All his battles with Will McDonald were able to prepare him for facing the league’s top pass rushers in the NFL.
3. Jets run-game
Throughout the off-season, Glenn has emphasized a run-heavy offensive strategy. The Jets and Packers game offered a glimpse of what could be the NFL’s premier RB room, with notable contributions from Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis, Kene Nwangwu, Donovan Edwards, and Lawrence Toafilli. While Allen had a solid performance with 8 carries for 33 yards, Donovan Edwards emerged as the standout, amassing 42 rushing yards on 9 carries and adding a 21-yard reception. Aware of the competition upon signing with the Jets as an UDFA, Edwards faces the challenge of climbing the depth chart behind three established running backs. His path to becoming the team’s RB4 and earning carries will be tough. However, if Edwards maintains this level of performance, he could solidify his role as the Jets’ RB4 and carve out opportunities in their new run-oriented offense, potentially becoming a key asset in their ground game.
4. Jets defense
The Jets’ defensive performance, especially the play of the D-line, was the biggest takeaway from the game against the Packers. Jay Tufele delivered an outstanding performance, recording 1.5 sacks and scoring a touchdown after Leonard Taylor II forced a fumble. Notably, Tufele had only 0.5 sacks in his previous four seasons with the Bengals and Jaguars. Given his dominant showing in this game, Tufele has positioned himself for a potential role in the Jets’ D-line rotation. The defense was able to hold the Packers 188 yards, which really made them struggle all game.
5. Jets offense
The Jets’ offense also showed promise from start to finish because of their newly added offensive weapons and play-calling. Due to the recent injury to Allen Lazard, the WR room now has opportunities for Quentin Skinner and Jamaal Pritchett to make the team. Both possess notable speed that could easily impact the Jets’ WR core. Skinner caught one pass for 26 yards, and Pritchett was used as a kick/punt returner.
This Saturday, the Jets will face the Giants. All eyes will be on whether the Jets’ offense and defense can continue to dominate. We’ll see what happens this Saturday. Let’s Go Jets!
