If you really want to know which position in sports is the hardest and most important, don’t look at analytics.
Don’t look at rings.
Don’t look at contracts.
Look at the aging process.
Some athletes retire and look refreshed, tan, and ready to start a podcast.
Others retire and look like they’ve been negotiating hostage situations since age 23.
That’s the difference.
The hardest jobs in sports don’t just demand talent — they demand:
Leadership
Memory
Stress tolerance
Emotional control
And the ability to fail publicly without disappearing into the ocean
Every major American team sport has that position.
The one that:
Touches the ball the most
Controls pace and decision-making
Gets blamed when anything goes wrong
And gets exactly zero sympathy
So let’s rank them — from stressful to soul-crushing — and explain why one position stands above all others as the ultimate franchise-defining nightmare.
4. Point Guard — The Floor General Until Someone Taller Takes Over
Point guard has always been sold as basketball’s hardest job.
You’re the coach on the floor.
You call sets.
You manage egos.
You control tempo.
And when you’re great, basketball looks beautiful.
Why They Matter
A dominant point guard:
Gets teammates paid
Controls pace
Decides when chaos or calm is needed
Turns role players into “sneaky good” guys fans overrate
The Legends
Magic Johnson – Changed basketball forever. A 6’9” point guard in the 1980s was basically cheating. He didn’t just run the offense — he was the offense.
Isiah Thomas – Ran the Pistons with toughness and spite. That man looked like he would fight your entire roster after the game.
John Stockton – The quiet assassin. All-time assists and steals leader while looking like your neighbor who grills every Sunday.
Modern Era
Steph Curry – Redefined spacing, shooting, and the sanity of defensive coordinators. Also ruined pickup basketball for a generation of kids who should not be shooting from the logo.
Chris Paul – One of the smartest players ever. Turned bad teams into playoff teams everywhere he went. Unfortunately, his hamstrings age faster than milk.
Luka Dončić – Plays point guard like he’s bored, still drops 35 and 10.
Why They’re Only #4
Basketball has a loophole.
When a LeBron, Jokic, Giannis, or prime Kevin Durant shows up, the point guard position becomes optional.
You can:
Hide a mediocre PG
Let a superstar wing run everything
Win titles while your “point guard” just brings the ball up and vibes
You cannot do that in football.
You cannot do that in baseball.
You cannot do that in hockey.
Stress level: Moderate
Aging curve: Slow
Replacement level: Exists

3. Goalie — One Man, One Mask, and Absolute Madness
Being a goalie is not a position — it’s a personality disorder.
You stand alone.
You face rubber bullets.
And you’re expected to be perfect while chaos explodes in front of you.
Why Goalies Matter
A dominant goalie can:
Neutralize superior teams
Steal playoff series
Turn average rosters into contenders
Make fans believe in destiny for two months
The Icons
Patrick Roy – Invented goalie confidence. Trash talked opponents while stopping everything. Changed the mental game forever.
Martin Brodeur – Turned boring into dominance. His puck-handling alone changed how teams forechecked.
Dominik Hasek – Played goalie like physics didn’t apply. Flopped, scrambled, still stopped everything.
Modern Era
Carey Price – Single-handedly dragged Montreal to relevance multiple times.
Andrei Vasilevskiy – Playoff mode Vasilevskiy is basically Thanos with pads.
Igor Shesterkin – The Rangers’ last line of sanity. Turns games into goalie clinics.
Why They’re Only #3
Here’s the cruel truth:
You can’t plan goalie dominance.
Goalies are:
Streaky
Mentally volatile
One bad bounce away from unraveling
You don’t build around goalies.
You hope your goalie turns into a superhero at the right time.
Stress level: Extreme
Aging curve: Random
Reliability: A prayer
2. Pitcher — Baseball’s Calm, Calculated Destroyer
Pitchers are different.
They don’t share responsibility.
They don’t hide mistakes.
They decide whether your lineup eats tonight.
Why Pitching Wins Championships
Hitting is streaky.
Pitching is control.
In October:
You can win without hitting well
You cannot win without pitching
The All-Time Greats
Pedro Martínez – Dominated the steroid era with finesse and arrogance. Embarrassed hitters.
Randy Johnson – Looked like he personally hated opposing batters.
Mariano Rivera – One pitch. One cutter. Infinite despair.
Modern Monsters
Max Scherzer – Competed like he was in a street fight.
Jacob deGrom – Best pitcher on Earth, cursed to pitch for the Mets.
Shohei Ohtani – Broke baseball’s rulebook. Pitcher, hitter, unicorn.
Why They’re Not #1
Pitchers are gods — part-time gods.
They:
Play once every five days
Or one inning as closers
Don’t lead the entire roster daily
They dominate games.
They don’t define franchises.
Stress level: High
Aging curve: Painful
Impact: Massive, but limited in time

1. The Position That Turns Franchises Into Therapy Sessions
This isn’t a debate.
This is a reality check.
Quarterback is the most important, difficult, and franchise-altering position in sports.
Why This Job Is Impossible
Quarterbacks:
Call plays
Read defenses
Adjust protections
Audible routes
Control tempo
Lead 52 teammates
Memorize hundreds of plays
Decide games in under 3 seconds
And if they fail?
Your franchise collapses.
The Legends
Joe Montana – Calm under pressure. Championships followed.
Tom Brady – Turned New England into a 20-year monarchy.
Peyton Manning – A coach in pads. Changed how offenses operate.
Brett Favre – Chaos, greatness, interceptions, vibes.
Modern Era
Patrick Mahomes – Football sorcery. Redefined off-script greatness.
Josh Allen – Built like a linebacker, throws like a rocket launcher.
Joe Burrow – Ice-cold. Confidence alone raises team IQ.
Why Franchise QBs Don’t Grow on Trees
Because you need:
Arm talent
Processing speed
Leadership
Durability
Coaching stability
Miss one?
Back to the draft.
Jets
Sanchez.
Geno.
Darnold.
Wilson.
The Jets don’t draft quarterbacks — they stress-test them.
Every preseason: “This feels different.”
Every October: “Fire everyone.”
Browns
Tim Couch.
Weeden.
Manziel.
Kizer.
Baker Mayfield (the one they finally got right and still ran out of town).
The Browns treat quarterbacks like lab experiments.
Patriots → Brady
Chiefs → Mahomes
Packers → Favre/Rodgers
Steelers → Roethlisberger
49ers → Montana/Young
Notice a trend?
FINAL RANKINGS
Quarterback – Defines decades
Pitcher – Ends seasons
Goalie – Steals miracles
Point Guard – Brilliant, but replaceable
You can survive bad guard play.
You can ride a hot goalie.
You can win ugly with pitching.
But if you don’t have a quarterback?
You’re not rebuilding.
You’re just aging publicly.
And fast.

My name is Errol Marks and I’d like to tell you why I believe I can be a major asset to your station. I’m from a small town in Long Island, NY and from a very young age I’ve always had a love for sports talk radio. Growing up, I would listen religiously to shows like Mike and the Mad Dog, Mike and Mike, and Imus in the Morning and studied what made those shows so great. I’ve made it my goal to be as influential as the hosts I grew up listening to, and with my knowledge of all major sports, enthusiastic and fearless personality, and my preparation skills, I know I can get to that level. This is an art and a medium that I’m passionate about and one that I feel can never be replaced.

What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting. I’m currently hosting New York’s Sports Loud Mouth, and you can find that show and the rest of our great shows at https://worldwidesportsradio.com/.

Our network’s content and listenership has grown significantly year to year and, in the past year, we’ve achieved 3.6 million minutes listened on our audio stream, over 29k followers on tik tok, 500k viewed on YouTube, 1.7 million downloads on Apple Podcasts, and 906,917 plays on Spotify. While we are enjoying a continued increase in growth, I feel that we can take this to a new level and a new audience with your help.

My goal since the day I started is to become the greatest and most recognizable sports radio show host in the country. I can guarantee that nobody in this industry currently has my passion, personality or ability to shape the future of sports broadcasting and entertainment like I do. If given the opportunity, I hope to further share my story and many talents with you and your station.
