- People who sit next to LeBron James on a podcast or share a locker room with Mike Krzyzewski… and suddenly wake up as the boss.
Welcome to the basketball multiverse, where logic takes a backseat and vibes get you hired.
JJ Redick: From Podcast Takes to Play Calls
Let’s start with JJ Redick — a man who went from breaking down pick-and-roll coverages on a mic to actually calling them… for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Now listen, JJ is smart. Like, scary film-room junkie smart. But coaching the Lakers is not a group project at Duke. This is Hollywood. This is pressure. This is LeBron staring at you mid-timeout like, “You sure about that, podcast boy?”
And yet… somehow it’s working.
The Lakers are hot. JJ’s offense has spacing, movement, and just enough “don’t mess this up” energy to keep things rolling. But let’s not act like this wasn’t the most “who you know” hire of the decade. You think any other rookie coach gets handed LeBron, a playoff roster, and keys to one of the most historic franchises in sports?
Absolutely not.
This wasn’t a hiring process. This was a group chat decision.

Jon Scheyer: Coach K’s Favorite Student… or Just the One Who Answered the Phone?
Now let’s talk about Jon Scheyer, the chosen one of Duke basketball. Handpicked by Coach K himself to take over the throne of the Duke Blue Devils.
And look — Scheyer has been good. Not great. Not legendary. Just… “yeah, that’ll do.”
He’s got talent every year (because it’s Duke, not because he’s a wizard recruiter), and this year he’s sitting pretty with a No. 1 seed. But let’s not forget last year — blowing a late lead to Houston Cougars in the Final Four like someone accidentally hit the self-destruct button.
Two minutes left… and the offense looked like five guys trying to remember a TikTok dance.
That’s coaching. That’s preparation. That’s “uh oh, we might not actually know what we’re doing here.”
The Common Thread: Right Place, Right Time, Right People
Both of these guys didn’t climb the mountain.
They took the elevator.
- JJ had the LeBron co-sign.
- Scheyer had the Coach K blessing.
Meanwhile, guys like Bobby Hurley are out here grinding, sweating, building programs brick by brick… and somehow HE’S not the guy to take over Duke?
Make it make sense.
Coach K didn’t pick the most experienced Blue Devil.
He picked the one who felt safest.
That’s not succession planning — that’s comfort food.

The Plot Twist: They’re Actually… Winning?
Here’s where it gets annoying.
- JJ Redick has the Lakers rolling like it’s 2010 again.
- Scheyer has Duke back in national title conversations.
So now what?
Now you can’t even fully hate.
They’re like that kid in school who never studied but aced the test anyway. You want them to fail just so the universe makes sense again — but nope, they’re sitting there smiling like “I guess I’m just built different.”
The Reality Check: No Ring, No Respect
Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud:
If they don’t win a championship… none of this matters.
- JJ Redick without a ring = “cool story, bro.”
- Jon Scheyer without a title = “Coach K’s intern.”
That’s the deal when you skip the line.
No grace period. No patience. No “he’s learning.”
You were handed the keys to a Ferrari — you better not crash it.
Final Take: Experiment or Long-Term Problem?
This isn’t just about JJ and Scheyer.
This is about a trend.
Teams aren’t hiring coaches anymore — they’re hiring relationships.
And right now, both experiments are surviving… maybe even thriving.
But if the wins stop?
If the playoffs go sideways?
If March Madness turns into March Sadness again?
Oh, it’s over.
The same people who crowned them will be the first ones saying:
“Yeah… they probably weren’t ready.”
JJ Redick and Jon Scheyer are living proof that sometimes life isn’t about experience… it’s about being in the right room when the right legend makes the wrong decision.
And until one of them holds up a championship trophy?
They’re not success stories.
They’re just really, really good guesses.

I’m from a small town in Long Island, NY and from a very young age I’ve always had a love for sports talk radio. Growing up, I would listen religiously to shows like Mike and the Mad Dog, Mike and Mike, and Imus in the Morning and studied what made those shows so great. I’ve made it my goal to be as influential as the hosts I grew up listening to, and with my knowledge of all major sports, enthusiastic and fearless personality, and my preparation skills, I know I can get to that level. This is an art and a medium that I’m passionate about and one that I feel can never be replaced.
What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting. While we are enjoying a continued increase in growth, I feel that we can take this to a new level and a new audience with your help.
My goal since the day I started is to become the greatest and most recognizable sports radio show host in the country. I can guarantee that nobody in this industry currently has my passion, personality or ability to shape the future of sports broadcasting and entertainment like I do.
