Before we dive into the greatest teams in the history of the New York Yankees, we need to address the elephant in the Bronx… the championship drought.
The Yankees used to win so often that the rest of Major League Baseball basically felt like extras in a Yankees documentary. But since the champagne showers of the 2009 World Series, things have been a little… dry.
And by dry, I mean the kind of drought that has Yankees fans pacing around the Bronx like caffeinated pigeons wondering if October is still on the calendar.
But before we crown the greatest Yankees team ever, we need to look back through the decades of dominance, chaos, superstars, and enough Hall of Famers to fill half of Cooperstown.
The 1930s Yankees: Murderers’ Row Reloaded
When you talk about early Yankees dominance, it starts with the human home-run machine, Babe Ruth.
Alongside him stood one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, Lou Gehrig, and later the smooth-swinging legend Joe DiMaggio.

Then came the late-70s Yankees — the most talented soap opera in sports.

Clutch hitting.
No weaknesses.

The greatest Yankees team ever assembled?
The 1998 Yankees.
They had leadership from Derek Jeter and the greatest closer baseball has ever seen in Mariano Rivera.
They didn’t just beat teams.
They crushed their souls by the seventh inning.
Debating the greatest Yankees team is like arguing which Lamborghini is the fastest.
But one thing is clear.
The 1998 Yankees didn’t just dominate baseball.
They ran the sport like it owed them money.
My Top 10 Thoughts On The Yanks Drought!
1.
The Yankees haven’t won a World Series since the 2009 World Series. At this point the drought is so long even the dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History look new.
2.
Kids entering high school today weren’t even alive when the Yankees last won. By the time they graduate college **Aaron Judge might finally get one… maybe.
3.
The Yankees payroll is so big it should come with its own GDP, but the trophy case since 2009 has been emptier than a pizza box at Yankee Stadium after the seventh inning stretch.
4.
Every year Yankees fans say “this is the year.” At this point it feels like watching Groundhog Day, except the ending never changes.
5.
Since the Yankees last won it all, Instagram was invented and baseball fans aged about twenty years waiting for another parade.
6.
Back in 2009 **Derek Jeter was winning championships. Now he’s retired, in the Hall of Fame, and probably wondering why the Yankees forgot how October works.
7.
The Yankees used to collect championships like kids collect baseball cards. Now they collect wild-card exits like limited editions.
8.
Every year the Yankees say the roster is built for October… yeah, October vacations in Cancun.
9.
The Yankees built a billion-dollar stadium and somehow turned it into the most expensive place to watch other teams celebrate.
10.
At this point the Yankees don’t need a new closer… they need a time machine back to the 1998 New York Yankees.
