Let me get this straight.

Oregon is ranked No. 2 in the country.

National championship expectations.

Loaded roster.

Dan Lanning walking around Eugene like he’s got the keys to the entire Pacific Northwest.

And then Boise State showed up and said:

“Yeah… about all that.”

Oregon escaped Boise State 34-27 Saturday night, but calling this a comfortable victory would be like calling a root canal a relaxing spa treatment.

This wasn’t a football game.

This was Oregon’s blood pressure test.

The 57,652 people inside Autzen Stadium didn’t finally exhale until Maddux Madsen threw a fourth-down prayer late in the fourth quarter that fell incomplete.

And I guarantee you there were Oregon fans in that stadium who had already mentally canceled their College Football Playoff hotel reservations.

Because Boise State wasn’t supposed to be the problem.

Boise State was supposed to be the appetizer.

Instead, they walked into Eugene and ordered the full-course meal.

Boise State came out swinging immediately.

They scored on their opening possession, stopped Oregon’s first two drives and basically told the Ducks:

“We’re not impressed by your ranking.”

Then Oregon muffed a punt in the second quarter, and Boise State turned that mistake into another touchdown.

At one point, the Broncos were up 17-7.

SEVENTEEN TO SEVEN!

At Autzen Stadium!

Against the No. 2 team in the country!

Oregon fans were looking at each other like:

“Did somebody accidentally schedule Georgia?”

And this wasn’t the first time Boise State almost ruined Oregon’s day.

Remember 2024?

Boise State nearly beat Oregon in Eugene before the Ducks escaped with a last-second field goal, 37-34.

So apparently Oregon has decided that playing Boise State is their annual cardiovascular exam.

Except this time, Oregon decided to make it even more dramatic.

The Ducks went into halftime down just 17-14, and Dan Lanning apparently decided it was time to remind everybody that he still had a pulse.

CBS reported that his halftime message was basically:

“We need to turn it the F up and turn it the F on.”

Now THAT is a halftime speech.

Forget the whiteboard.

Forget the analytics.

Forget the motivational quotes.

Dan Lanning walked in there like:

“ENOUGH OF THIS NONSENSE!”

And apparently it worked.

Oregon came flying out of halftime and scored 17 unanswered points.

Suddenly, the Ducks looked like the No. 2 team everybody expected.

But Boise State wasn’t going anywhere.

By the middle of the fourth quarter, the game was still tied.

That’s when Dante Moore found Dakorien Moore for a 62-yard touchdown.

And suddenly Oregon had the lead.

And suddenly 57,652 people could breathe again.

And suddenly every Oregon fan could stop Googling:

“Can a preseason national championship favorite be eliminated in Week 1?”

Here’s the crazy part:

Oregon outgained Boise State by nearly 200 yards.

So how the hell was this game this close?

I’ll tell you how.

PENALTIES.

Oregon committed 10 penalties for 90 yards.

TEN!

That’s not discipline.

That’s Oregon running a football team like they’re handing out parking tickets.

And two of those penalties were unsportsmanlike conduct calls.

Lanning admitted it afterward:

“A lot of it was self-inflicted.”

Translation:

“We almost beat ourselves before Boise State had to.”

They also lost the turnover battle and allowed Boise State to control the ball for more than 31 minutes.

Lanning wasn’t hiding from it either.

He called the performance “not good enough” and said it wasn’t winning football.

And he’s absolutely right.

If Oregon wants to win a national championship, they can’t spend September giving their fans heart attacks against teams they’re supposed to beat.

But here’s where I actually think this game could help Oregon.

Sometimes a team needs to get punched in the mouth early.

You don’t want to walk through September beating everybody by 40 points and then discover in November that you’ve never been tested.

Boise State just gave Oregon a giant flashing neon sign that says:

“HEY GUYS… FIX THIS.”

And Dante Moore basically admitted that after the game.

He said they’re fortunate it wasn’t a 50-point blowout because this game showed them who they are right now and what they need to work on.

THAT is the right attitude.

Because Oregon didn’t play championship football Saturday.

They played “please don’t let Boise State ruin our season in Week 1” football.

But here’s the good news for Oregon:

They won.

That’s the most important part.

Nobody is handing out trophies for looking pretty in September.

You learn.

You fix the mistakes.

You clean up the penalties.

You stop giving the football away.

And you move forward.

And there’s actually some history here.

When Boise State came into Eugene in 2024 and nearly beat Oregon, the Ducks used that scare as fuel.

They went on to finish the regular season undefeated and win the Big Ten championship.

So maybe Boise State is Oregon’s annual wake-up call.

Maybe every championship team needs that one game where everybody looks around and says:

“Okay… we’re not as good as we thought we were.”

Because that’s exactly what this was.

A wake-up call.

Dan Lanning knows it.

Dante Moore knows it.

The players know it.

And every Oregon fan knows it.

Because if you’re ranked No. 2 in America and Boise State has you sweating through your jersey in the fourth quarter…

YOU BETTER BELIEVE THIS TEAM IS GOING BACK TO PRACTICE ON MONDAY LIKE THEY JUST GOT CAUGHT STEALING MONEY FROM THE COOKIE JAR.

Oregon survived.

But they didn’t exactly make a statement.

They made a 911 CALL.

And that’s why this victory might end up being more valuable than a 50-point blowout.

Because now the Ducks know exactly what they need to fix.

The question is:

Will this be the game that wakes Oregon up…

or

the game that tells us No. 2 was ranked about 15 spots too high?

Now THAT’S the conversation.

My name is Errol Marks and I’d like to tell you why I believe I can be a major asset to your station. I’m from a small town in Long Island, NY and from a very young age I’ve always had a love for sports talk radio. Growing up, I would listen religiously to shows like Mike and the Mad Dog, Mike and Mike, and Imus in the Morning and studied what made those shows so great. I’ve made it my goal to be as influential as the hosts I grew up listening to, and with my knowledge of all major sports, enthusiastic and fearless personality, and my preparation skills, I know I can get to that level. This is an art and a medium that I’m passionate about and one that I feel can never be replaced.

What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting. I’m currently hosting New York’s Sports Loud Mouth, and you can find that show and the rest of our great shows at https://worldwidesportsradio.com/.

Our network’s content and listenership has grown significantly year to year and, in the past year, we’ve achieved 3.6 million minutes listened on our audio stream, over 29k followers on tik tok, 500k viewed on YouTube, 1.7 million downloads on Apple Podcasts, and 906,917 plays on Spotify. While we are enjoying a continued increase in growth, I feel that we can take this to a new level and a new audience with your help.

My goal since the day I started is to become the greatest and most recognizable sports radio show host in the country. I can guarantee that nobody in this industry currently has my passion, personality or ability to shape the future of sports broadcasting and entertainment like I do. If given the opportunity, I hope to further share my story and many talents with you and your station.
