Opening Night Buzz: Trenton Thunder Kicks Off Draft League Season with Star Power and Big Performances

There are firsts you never forget — and Wednesday night at Trenton Thunder Ballpark will be one I’ll always remember. Covering my very first baseball game as a reporter, I had the privilege of witnessing the excitement of Opening Night with one of the premier organizations in the MLB Draft League, the Trenton Thunder. A packed house, electric energy, and future stars on display made for an unforgettable debut.

I’m incredibly grateful to Mike Warren, Director of Broadcast & Media Relations, for giving me the opportunity to do what I’ve always dreamed of: cover the sport I love. And what a game to start with.

The Thunder’s roster this season is stacked with intriguing talent, and Opening Night offered a glimpse into what could be a special summer in Trenton. Among the standout names were Carsten Sabathia — son of Hall of Famer CC Sabathia — Jaden Sheffield, son of the legendary Gary Sheffield, and an 18-year-old fireballer named Miguel Sime Jr.

Sime, a right-handed pitcher out of Poly Prep in Brooklyn, N.Y., turned heads with a performance that showcased both his raw talent and immense potential. Already known for touching 95 mph at age 15, Sime’s fastball topped out at 100 mph on Wednesday night. Though he showed some command issues — expected from a pitcher his age — the upside is undeniable.

In the first inning, Sime faced some adversity. A passed ball allowed a runner to reach first, and a dropped fly ball in left field added pressure. He walked a batter and then gave up a two-run home run. But the young righty bounced back, striking out the next batter to end the frame with poise.

The second inning started similarly bumpy, with Sime hitting the leadoff batter, but he soon settled in and found his rhythm. Originally scheduled to throw just 50 pitches, he ended up tossing 88 — a testament to his endurance and competitive edge.

Another impressive debut came from Carsten Sabathia. At 6’4” and 245 pounds, the 21-year-old first baseman showed why scouts are keeping a close eye on him. He went 1-for-4 at the plate, lacing a double and making a smooth defensive play at first. More than just his size and skills, Sabathia impressed with his professionalism and demeanor — a respectful, grounded young man who clearly carries himself with class. Whichever team ends up drafting him will be getting much more than just a solid ballplayer.

The night was a celebration of baseball and a glimpse at the next generation of stars. Thunders lose their home opener 13-4 but If Opening Night is any indication, the 2025 Trenton Thunder season is going to be something special to watch with a few young raising stars — and I couldn’t be more excited to be along for the ride.
