Let me take you back to the darkest day in Islanders history — the day John “Bean Bag” Tavares zipped up his little Toronto Maple Leafs pajamas, kissed the Isles goodbye, and ran off like a kid at summer camp who forgot to pack courage. Now, let’s not kid ourselves — this isn’t going to be easy. The Islanders still have holes. They’ve still got that occasional “why can’t we score?” disease that’s plagued them since the early 2000s. But Schaefer brings something you can’t teach: belief.

Long Island’s been waiting for a hero since Bean Bag packed his blankie — and buddy, I think we finally found him.

So let’s crank up that goal horn, bring back the “YES! YES! YES!” chant, and welcome the new king of the Island.
