Klay Thompson is officially leaving Dallas and heading to Miami on a two-year deal worth nearly $13 million — and honestly, I don’t blame the man.
Klay looked at the Dallas Mavericks and said, “You know what? I’ve already been through enough injuries. I’m not about to spend my retirement years watching this team lose 56 games!”
Klay is getting divorced from Dallas!
And this wasn’t one of those messy celebrity divorces where everybody says, “We wish each other the best,” while secretly throwing furniture.
Nope.
Klay basically walked into the Mavericks’ office and said:
“Masai, pack my stuff. I’m going to Miami.”
And who could blame him?
The Mavericks went 26-56 last season.
TWENTY-SIX AND FIFTY-SIX!
That’s not a basketball record.
That’s a cry for help!
Klay was supposed to make $17.5 million next season, but apparently he decided that $17.5 million wasn’t enough money to watch another season of that circus.
He said, “I’ll take less money and more winning.”
And now he’s heading to Miami, where the Heat just traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
So let me get this straight:
Klay went from Dallas…
TO GIANNIS AND BAM ADEBAYO?!
That’s not a basketball decision.
That’s an escape plan!
Klay saw Giannis walking through the door and said, “WAIT… THERE ARE ACTUAL ADULTS HERE?”
Miami desperately needed shooting, and Klay still brings one thing that never seems to completely disappear:
That jumper.
The man is 36 years old, coming off two seasons in Dallas where he averaged 12.9 points and shot 38.7% from three.
Is he the Klay Thompson from Golden State?
No.
That Klay is probably somewhere in a museum next to Michael Jordan’s sneakers and Shaq’s old jerseys.
But do I think Klay can still knock down shots when teams are worried about Giannis attacking the basket?
HELL YES.
Because now you have Giannis coming downhill looking like a freight train with a basketball, Bam doing Bam things, and Klay standing in the corner looking like he just ordered a pizza.
Then BOOM!
THREE!
And here’s the part I love.
Klay spent 13 seasons in Golden State, won FOUR championships, made FIVE All-Star teams, and became one of the greatest shooters this sport has ever seen.
Then he goes to Dallas.
And two years later he basically says:
“Yeah… I’m going back to civilization.”
That’s cold!
Klay also sits at 2,899 career three-pointers, which puts him fourth all-time.
He needs 75 more to pass Ray Allen for third.
So Miami might be getting more than just a shooter.
They could be getting another piece of NBA history.
And let’s be honest — Klay Thompson with Giannis is MUCH more interesting than Klay Thompson watching the Mavericks rebuild from the front row.
Klay didn’t leave Dallas because he hates Dallas.
He left because he wants to compete.
At 36, he knows the clock is ticking.
This is the stage of your career where you don’t want to hear:
“Klay, we’re rebuilding.”
REBUILDING?!
Klay probably said:
“I rebuilt my knee. I rebuilt my Achilles. I rebuilt my career. I’M NOT REBUILDING YOUR ROSTER!”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why Klay Thompson is going to Miami.
He wants sunshine.
He wants beaches.
He wants Giannis.
He wants Bam.
He wants meaningful basketball.
And most importantly…
HE WANTS TO STOP LOSING!
Dallas gave Klay $17.5 million.
Miami is giving him nearly $13 million.
And Klay basically said:
“KEEP THE EXTRA $4.5 MILLION. I WANT TO SEE APRIL!”
THAT’S HOW BAD IT GOT IN DALLAS!
Klay Thompson just took a pay cut to upgrade from “Maybe next year” to “LET’S GO WIN THIS DAMN THING!”
And I can’t even be mad at him.
Because sometimes in life, you don’t need more money.
You just need to get the hell out of Dallas!

What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting.
