The New York Islanders just pulled the most Islanders move imaginable.
With FOUR games left, a playoff spot hanging by a thread, and the fanbase stress-eating bagels at 2 AM… they fired Patrick Roy and hired Peter DeBoer.
Four. Games. Left.
That’s not a coaching change… that’s changing the pilot while the plane is landing.
Wait… wasn’t Roy basically Coach of the Year two weeks ago?
Let’s rewind.
The Islanders spent most of the season in a comfortable playoff spot.
Roy had the team buzzing.
He was coaching up young superstar Matthew Schafer.
The defense was structured.
The identity was clear.
Fans were saying:
“Is this… competence? On Long Island? Is that allowed?”
Roy went from “Coach of the Year” to “clean out your office” faster than Islanders fans leave UBS Arena when the LIRR schedule looks scary.
Then came the skid…
7 losses in their last 10.
Suddenly the Islanders went from comfortably in… to checking the standings every 4 minutes like it’s the stock market.
And let’s not forget — they traded picks and a young player for Brayden Schenn.
That’s a win-now move, not a “fire the coach before the playoffs” move.
So what did the Islanders do?
They panicked.
Not normal panic.
Long Island panic.
The kind where you buy milk, bread, eggs, and fire your coach.
The Vegas Effect (Everyone wants to be Vegas)
This smells exactly like what the Vegas Golden Knights did when they dumped their coach and brought in Bruce Cassidy… and then immediately won the Stanley Cup.
Now every GM thinks:
“Fire coach → win Cup → genius.”
That’s like me eating one salad and expecting abs tomorrow.
That’s not how this works.
Do I think this was the right move?
No.
Absolutely not.
Not with FOUR games left.
This is like:
- Changing quarterbacks in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl
- Firing your DJ mid-wedding
- Switching pizza places after they already delivered
It’s chaos.
If you were going to fire Roy…
Do it 10 games ago.
Do it in the offseason.
Do it when the skid started.
But four games left?
That’s not strategy.
That’s vibes.
Why Peter DeBoer actually makes sense (yes… really)
Now here’s the twist…
As crazy as the timing is… Peter DeBoer is actually the perfect chaos coach.
Look at his resume:
- Stanley Cup Final with New Jersey
- Stanley Cup Final with San Jose
- Deep runs with Vegas
- Consistent playoff success everywhere he goes
DeBoer is basically:
“Break glass in case of emergency” coach
And the Islanders?
Yeah… this is definitely an emergency.
He’s known for:
- Tight defensive systems
- Simplifying offense
- Getting veteran teams locked in fast
- Not caring about feelings — just results
Which is exactly what this Islanders team needs right now.
This move screams one thing:
The Islanders think this roster can win RIGHT NOW.
You don’t fire Roy with 4 games left unless:
- The locker room needed a shock
- The GM lost confidence
- The team stopped responding
- Or you believe DeBoer can flip the switch immediately
This is a Stanley Cup or bust move.
Not a “let’s just make playoffs” move.
This is:
“We didn’t trade for Schenn to lose in Round 1” energy.
Was firing Patrick Roy the right move?
No.
Was hiring Peter DeBoer the right move?
Yes.
Was doing BOTH with 4 games left completely insane?
Absolutely.
But you know what…
Sometimes insane works.
And if the Islanders go on a run…
This becomes genius.
If they miss the playoffs…
This becomes one of the wildest panic moves in NHL history.
Either way…
The Islanders just made hockey VERY interesting again.

What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting.
