The NBA offseason is officially here, which means one thing: every superstar is apparently getting traded to every team.
According to social media, Giannis Antetokounmpo is heading to Boston, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Mars, and possibly your local LA Fitness by next Tuesday.
But while Celtics fans are busy photoshopping Giannis in green jerseys faster than Jayson Tatum can text recruiting messages, Boston might have a backup plan.
And no, it’s not finding another first-round draft pick hidden underneath Danny Ainge’s old desk.
It’s New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Celtics are among several teams interested in Murphy if they can’t pull off the blockbuster deal for “The Greek Freak.”
Let’s be honest: going from Giannis Antetokounmpo to Trey Murphy III feels a little like walking into a Ferrari dealership and leaving with a really nice Honda Accord.
Nothing wrong with the Accord—it gets great mileage—but you’re still thinking about the Ferrari all the way home.
Now before Celtics fans start throwing clam chowder at their televisions, hear me out.
Murphy is coming off a breakout season, averaging 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. The 26-year-old is entering his prime, plays both ends of the floor, and most importantly for Boston’s front office, doesn’t require selling half the roster, three future first-round picks, and the rights to every child born in Massachusetts until 2042.
Giannis, meanwhile, is still one of the most dominant players on the planet.
The résumé speaks for itself: NBA champion, Finals MVP, two-time league MVP, 10-time All-Star, human fast break, and the only man alive who can euro-step from Providence to downtown Boston.
The problem?
He’s expensive.
Really expensive.
Like “check your bank account twice before opening the app” expensive.
He’s also battled injuries recently, appearing in just 36 games last season. That’s enough to make even the most aggressive front offices think twice before handing over the keys to the franchise.
Meanwhile, Murphy is younger, healthier, and significantly more affordable.
In today’s NBA, finding a two-way wing who can score 20-plus points a night is harder than finding a Knicks fan who stayed patient for the last 25 years.
The bigger question remains: would Boston actually break up the Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown duo?
Every offseason, Brown gets mentioned in trade rumors more often than LeBron gets mentioned in GOAT debates.
Yet every season, he reminds everyone why the Celtics gave him that massive contract.
Pairing Giannis with Tatum sounds incredible on paper. It also sounds incredibly complicated when the salary cap enters the conversation.
The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement has front offices sweating harder than fans trying to explain the second apron rules.
So maybe Boston’s smartest move isn’t swinging for the fences.
Maybe it’s hitting a double.
Adding Trey Murphy III keeps the Celtics younger, deeper, and financially flexible while preserving their championship window.
Of course, this is the NBA offseason.
By tomorrow afternoon, Giannis could be linked to the Yankees, Trey Murphy could somehow end up on the Lakers, and Celtics fans will convince themselves they’re getting both players for a second-round pick and a Dunkin’ gift card.
Welcome to silly season.
Nobody survives it.
