The New York Giants kicked off the 2025 season with an embarrassing 21–6 loss to the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels delivered a polished debut, passing for 233 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 68 rushing yards to his stat line. The offense was anchored by standout performances from Deebo Samuel, who notched 77 receiving yards and capped the game with a 19-yard rushing touchdown, and Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, the rookie running back who churned out 82 yards and a 6-yard TD run.

Defensively, Washington surged, limiting the Giants to just 231 total yards and no touchdowns. Two pivotal red-zone stops forced New York to settle for field goals. The Giants’ offense managed 74 rushing yards (44 coming from Russell Wilson himself), while Wilson ended with a pedestrian 17-of-37 for 168 passing yards and zero TDs.

On the flip side, the Giants looked flat. Russell Wilson’s debut as New York’s starter was underwhelming and sparked speculation about his future amid his 200th career start. Head coach Brian Daboll declined to confirm Wilson as the Week 2 starter, raising questions about his job security. Offensive struggles were pervasive: ineffective run blocking, missed red-zone opportunities, and lackluster secondary coverage plagued New York. Meanwhile, Malik Nabers did manage 5 catches for 71 yards, but the overall performance felt disjointed.

Despite the win, Washington head coach Dan Quinn and Jayden Daniels acknowledged offensive “sloppiness”—penalties and miscues they hope to trim during a short turnaround before Thursday’s game in Green Bay. Still, with new weapons like Samuel and Croskey-Merritt delivering and the defense imposing its will, the Commanders established a strong foundation for the season. On the other side, the Giants clearly have glaring areas to address if they hope to rebound from a rough Week 1 outing.

I love being a part of sports, I was always infatuated and relished watching the thrill players get from playing in big games. Always wanting to be a professional football player, it wasn’t until later on I realized the significance of sports media. As a sports broadcaster you being the individual who narrates the story behind the game, it allows viewers at home to share the same passion for the sport.
