Ladies and gentlemen… the Yankees didn’t just call up George Lombard Jr.
They basically walked into Anthony Volpe’s locker and said…
“Hey buddy… we’re gonna need your parking pass.”
Cold world.
George Lombard Jr. made his Major League debut Tuesday night and looked like he’d been playing in the Bronx for five years instead of five innings.
The kid didn’t blink.
He didn’t panic.
He didn’t look nervous.
He just walked into Yankee Stadium like he owned stock in Monument Park.
After flashing the leather with a silky smooth double play that had Yankees fans yelling, “WHO IS THIS KID?!” Lombard came up in his second at-bat and absolutely DESTROYED a hanging breaking ball from Hunter Dobbins.
Boom.
First career hit.
First career home run.
First career curtain call from Yankees fans.
Not a bad Tuesday.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Scranton…
Anthony Volpe was probably looking at his phone saying…
“Wait… THAT’S my replacement?!”
But wait…
The baseball gods weren’t finished cooking.
About an hour before George launched his first Major League homer, his younger brother Jacob Lombard made HIS professional debut with the Miami Marlins organization…
…and guess what he did?
HE HIT A HOME RUN TOO!
You can’t make this stuff up!
Same day.
Same inning of their careers.
Same type of hanging breaking ball.
Almost the exact same exit velocity.
Almost the exact same launch angle.
At this point I’m convinced these two brothers were created in a baseball laboratory somewhere.
Forget DNA…
Check the Louisville Slugger factory.
And here’s the best part.
George’s parents originally planned to watch Jacob’s first professional game in Florida.
Then the Yankees called George up Monday night.
Suddenly Mom and Dad were booking flights faster than Yankees fans trying to get playoff tickets after Aaron Judge hits one into orbit.
Poor Jacob probably said…
“Don’t worry about me. My brother’s making his debut in Yankee Stadium. I’ll just hit a homer too.”
Mission accomplished.
Imagine being those parents.
One son hits his first professional homer.
An hour later…
Your other son hits his first Major League homer.
That’s not a parenting win…
That’s Hall of Fame parenting.
George Sr., the Tigers bench coach, was sitting in Yankee Stadium watching his son’s dream come true while Aaron Boone looked over and smiled.
Honestly…
If someone made this into a Disney movie I’d probably make fun of it for being unrealistic.
Instead…
It’s real life.
Now let’s talk about what this REALLY means.
This wasn’t just a feel-good story.
This was the Yankees sending a message.
Anthony Volpe was optioned to Triple-A.
George Lombard Jr. was handed the keys.
Translation…
“Kid… go save our season.”
No pressure.
Just chase down the Rays, win the AL East and maybe bring another championship back to the Bronx.
Easy enough.
And judging by Game One…
He might actually do it.
He looked smooth in the field.
He looked comfortable at the plate.
He looked like the moment was too small for HIM instead of the other way around.
Yankees fans have been waiting for the next homegrown superstar.
Tuesday night might’ve been the first chapter.
Now we’ll see if this becomes the sequel we’ve all been waiting for.
One thing’s for sure…
George Lombard Jr. didn’t just introduce himself to New York.
He kicked the front door down, hit a baseball into the seats, and announced…
“I’m home.”
And Anthony Volpe?
Buddy…
I’d keep that GPS set to Scranton for just a little while longer.

What makes my story so unique goes beyond my 10+ years of experience in sports media. In addition to over ten years of creating and hosting sports talk radio shows, I created the World Wide Sports Radio Network - one of the first ever digital sports radio networks - in 2012. Since the network began, we have had some of the best content in digital sports media. We have six quality shows on our network covering all sports and sports betting.
