On March 11, 2026, the Buffalo Bills officially agreed to a trade with the Chicago Bears, sending their 2026 second-round pick in exchange for wide receiver DJ Moore and a 2026 fifth-round pick. The trade received mixed reviews around the NFL world, with some believing that the Bills may have overcompensated for the 28-year-old receiver.
This trade raises several questions among fans: How does this trade impact the Bills? Did the Bills overpay for Moore? Will this be the move to get the Bills to their first Super Bowl in the Josh Allen era?
Let’s look at the stats and Moore’s career so far and determine how he can fit into this new Bills offense.
DJ Moore was drafted by the Carolina Panthers with the 24th pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Standing at 6’0” and 225 pounds, Moore was viewed as a strong, physical receiver with an elite yards-after-catch (YAC) ability and reliable hands.
With the Carolina Panthers, he was a dynamic receiver, tallying three 1,000-yard seasons within his first five seasons. His best season in Carolina came during the 2020 NFL season. He played in 15 games and started in 14. He recorded 66 receptions for 1,193 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 118 targets. Additionally, he averaged 18.1 yards per reception, the most in his career.

Then, in 2023, Moore was part of a blockbuster deal that sent him to the Chicago Bears, giving the Panthers the No. 1 overall pick in that year’s draft. In his first year in the Windy City, Moore had his best season to date, racking up 96 receptions for 1,364 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns.
In the following two years with Chicago, his production declined due to factors such as a new offensive scheme that limited his targets, a Bears offense that became stockpiled with talent, and inconsistent chemistry with quarterback Caleb Williams.
In those seasons, he totaled 148 receptions for 1,948 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 225 targets. He played 53 out of 53 games (including playoffs) with the Chicago Bears, a testament to his durability.
Overall, DJ Moore’s skill-set and versatility at wide receiver can have a huge impact on this team’s offense. Throughout his eight seasons in the NFL, he’s proven to be a No. 1 receiver. He has the ability to elevate an offense, forcing defenses to focus on him and create opportunities for other players.
So, how does this trade impact the Bills?
Since trading All-Pro receiver Stefon Diggs in 2023, the Bills haven’t had a player who can match Diggs’ offensive production. In 2024, they drafted Keon Coleman, a wide receiver out of Florida State University, to become that offensive juggernaut Diggs was. However, in two seasons with the Bills, he hasn’t met those expectations.
With the addition of Moore, it’s a significant upgrade to their wide receiver room, meshing well with the Bills’ style of offense, a system he has experience with.
He previously worked with Bills head coach Joe Brady during his tenure in Carolina as the offensive coordinator. Moore’s best years in Carolina took place under Brady’s offensive scheme.
This trade reconnects that duo, allowing Moore to thrive in an offense that he’s familiar with. Moving on from his connection to Brady, Moore’s offensive skill-set can provide the Bills with the offensive production Diggs had.
Additionally, Moore has been a consistent deep threat throughout his career. Now, with the 2024 MVP Josh Allen, the Allen–Moore connection can greatly expand this already dynamic Bills offense. His ability to complete contested catches allows him to create positive plays in not so desirable situations. He can make those necessary plays down the stretch.

So, that leads us to our second question: Did the Bills overpay for DJ Moore? No, and here’s why:
Buffalo gave up only a second-round pick to acquire Moore, not a first. It would be hard to get a player in the draft like Moore. Furthermore, throughout his tenure as the GM, Brandon Beane hasn’t made the greatest selections in the second round.
He’s had hits such as James Cook and O’Cyrus Torrence, but has had multiple misses, such as Boogie Basham and most recently Keon Coleman. DJ Moore is a much safer bet than any second-round receiver in this year’s draft.
Additionally, reviewing what the Denver Broncos recently gave up for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, it seems the Moore trade was actually a steal. The Broncos gave up their 2026 first, second, and third picks to acquire Waddle. Giving up a second-round pick, for a player with similar production while only being a year older is a bargain.
Finally, this brings us to the ultimate question. The question that has all us NFL fans wondering: Could this be the move to get the Bills to their first Super Bowl in the Josh Allen era? Yes, and here’s why:
Throughout the Josh Allen era, the Bills have been at the cusp of the Lombardi Trophy. The Bills have been so close, yet so far away. Since 2020, they’ve lost to the Kansas City Chiefs four times, lost once to the Cincinnati Bengals, and most recently lost to the Denver Broncos.
In four out of the six losses, they lost by a single possession, and in heartbreaking ways. In 2022, it was the Bills mishandling the final “13 seconds” on defense. In 2024, it was Tyler Bass’ field goal attempt that sailed “Wide Right”. In 2025, it was a missed fourth-down conversion to Dalton Kincaid that sealed the game. In 2026, it was the five turnovers Josh Allen and James Cook combined for that gave the game away.
In those four games, there were maybe one or two plays that could have changed the outcomes of those games. Could DJ Moore have been the guy to make those plays? Yes, he can, because we’ve seen him do it before.
For example, on Week 16 vs the Green Bay Packers during the 2025 season, we saw Moore catch a 46-yard touchdown over a defender to seal the game in overtime. That game was especially important because it gave the Chicago Bears the number one seed in the NFC at the time. So, we’ve seen Moore step up when the lights are brightest.
Ultimately, the DJ Moore trade was a smart move with high upside. With Moore as the focal point of the Bills offense, this can elevate an already elite offensive system in Buffalo. If he continues to be the player he’s been through his career, it could finally put away the ghosts of Buffalo’s past, and bring them what they desire most: a Super Bowl ring.
