The sports gambling monster has found its next victim… Shane Pinto, a forward for the Ottawa Senators, has received a historic 41-game suspension from the National Hockey League for his involvement in sports gambling. Shane is the first hockey player in the modern era to receive a suspension for sports betting. Pinto was suspended after it was discovered during an investigation that he had participated in sports betting activities even though there was no proof he had placed a wager on an NHL game.

The league withheld specifics regarding Pinto’s behavior and the method used to find him breaking the rules of the league’s gambling policies. Shane Pinto apologized to the NHL, the Ottawa Senators, his teammates, the Ottawa community, and most importantly, his family, in a statement released by the team. He said he was excited to get back on the ice with his team and took full responsibility for his actions. In the absence of any new evidence, Pinto isn’t disputing the suspension, and the case is considered officially closed.

Since Pinto is currently an unsigned restricted free agent, his suspension will continue for half of the season. Once he gets an extension, Pinto is expected to rejoin the squad. With that being said, here are my five bold predictions for the 2023-24 regular season.

1. James Harden gets traded to the Western Conference

James Harden has been very unhappy with the Philadelphia 76ers throughout the offseason and went out of his way to request a trade. Keep in mind that this isn’t the first time that Harden has requested a trade with a team, as he also requested one in Houston and Brooklyn. He has mainly criticized president Daryl Morey by calling him a liar at a promotional event in China and saying that their relationship was “fractured”. The 76ers had talks with the Clippers, Knicks, Rockets, and the Heat, but nothing grew into serious discussion. Harden has yet to show up to any 76ers practices, and there’s a massive chance that the 76ers open the season without the star PG. After several weeks of the disgruntled star causing havoc, the 76ers will trade Harden to the Western Conference.

2. The Knicks trade for Karl-Anthony Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns has been linked to the Knicks for the last couple of offseasons, but nothing has come to fruition involving a trade. I believe that this offseason is the one where president Leon Rose pulls the trigger. Towns is coming off a season in Minnesota where he averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. He also just received a massive extension (4 yrs, $224M) and is being owed $36 million this year. Rumors of the Knicks possibly trading for the center ignited when Knicks brass called Towns over before a preseason game and Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau praised his former player in a press conference. This move would send shockwaves throughout the NBA as the Knicks would instantly jump to a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.

3. The Celtics win over 60 games and finish as the No.1 seed in the Eastern Conference

The Celtics won 57 games last season with a starting lineup of Marcus Smart, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Al Horford. That is a very good lineup, but this year’s may blow you away: Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Kristaps Porzingis. Add in a deep bench and this could be a very scary team if they show chemistry quickly. Tatum and Brown are coming off very successful seasons, 30.1 PPG and 26.6 PPG respectively, and Derrick White/Payton Pritchard can be anchors at the guard position. Jrue Holiday should be a massive upgrade over Smart on the offensive end, as he averaged 19.3 PPG and 7.4 APG with the Trail Blazers. Finally, Porzingis can be a solid center in the Celtics’ system, as he averaged 23.2 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and provides spacing with his three point ability.

4. The Thunder finish with over 45 wins and avoid the play-in tournament

The Thunder shattered expectations by going 40-42 last season and losing to the Timberwolves in the first round. This was mainly because of the MVP-caliber season from Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, who averaged 31.4 PPG, 5.5 APG, and shot 51% from the field. The growth of Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams also contributed to OKC’s shocking season. Going into this season, the debut of No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren can improve the team to even greater heights. He showed lots of promise during the preseason, as he had 18 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and a block on Damian Lillard. If the Thunder can stay healthy, I can see this team avoiding the play-in and being a top 6 seed.

5. Luka Doncic wins his first MVP

Luka Doncic had an outstanding season last year (32.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 8.0 APG), but the Mavericks couldn’t make the postseason with the addition of Kyrie Irving. They had a prolific offense last season, but they also had the 25th rated defense. I see a bounceback season coming from the Mavs, as they re-signed Dwight Powell and Kyrie Irving and added Seth Curry, Grant Williams, Dante Exum, Richaun Holmes, and Derrick Jones Jr. These moves were all intended to upgrade the Mavs’ defense, and this can definitely get them back into the playoffs. All of these factors will lead to Luka winning his first MVP, as he will nearly average a 30-10-10 triple double throughout the season, and Dallas avoiding the play-in tournament.

6. The Celtics beat the Nuggets in 6 games to win the NBA Finals

The Celtics will return to the NBA Finals after almost completing a 3-0 comeback against the Miami Heat last season. Boston will finish the season as the clear No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference by advancing to the Finals because of their stacked roster. Tatum and Brown will anchor the offense, Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis have solid seasons, and Derrick White becomes a finalist for 6MOY. In the West, Nikola Jokic will have another MVP-caliber season with Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon and Caldwell-Pope will play secondary roles, and the Nuggets’ prolific offense will carry them through a talented Western Conference yet again. Boston’s roster will keep the Nuggets’ scoring in check, and the Celtics will win their first title in the Jaylen Brown-Jayson Tatum era to wrap up the 2023-24 season

It is with a heavy heart that I write this article about what Sir Bobby Charlton did for English football and Manchester United. Sir Bobby Charlton began his career as a youth player at Manchester United and became a legend of the club through his 17 years there, undoubtedly England has lost a gentle soul.

The man who survived the Munich air disaster in 1958, who then went on to win the European Cup with the new squad inclusive of George Best is one of his greatest achievements in a long list of accolades.

In 1966 he did what no other Englishman had ever done, and it was to lead their country to the World Cup title. Sir Bobby was an integral part of the squad being the captain with his late brother Jack there to share the spotlight. Charlton was regarded as the best in the world during his playing days, with Pele once saying “He could shoot from Manchester and score in Rio de Janeiro”.He was also regarded by many as a gentleman, a hero, and a giant to many.

The club where he made his name released a statement following his passing. The statement said “A graduate of our Youth Academy, Sir Bobby played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup. The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has once again made the headlines for the wrong reasons. After a successful and historic World Cup campaign, the JFF has neglected to pay over the winnings/earnings from that tournament to their players. The earnings for 135,000 Australian dollars (AUD) per player, has not been deposited to the players yet.

According to sources in the federation, Dennis Chung, the general secretary has made this situation more than it should have been and is on “the hot seat”. There was also talk of meetings being held without the Gen. Sec. present, even though he was at work. With the elections looming, his employment at the JFF could be under threat, regardless of who wins.

In terms of finances, there was an agreement that the players would receive a 20% payout from the funds paid out by FIFA separate from the earnings of the World Cup (amounting to around AUD 700,000). Over the last week or so there have been an insane amount of posts regarding Taylor Swift at the game, or just any references about her at all. This is all good news for all the parties involved in this new developing relationship, as it’s gaining Taylor, Travis, and the NFL more publicity from everyone around the world. Obviously, when there is more publicity for people or things, they are going to earn a following or a fan base and that brings in revenue for everyone. The social media presence of this whole story is doing wonders for the publicity of the NFL, and even bringing them in additional revenue they probably didn’t otherwise get from the Swift fanbase.

Additionally, Fanatics, the NFL’s official merchandise supplier, reported a stunning 400% surge in Kelce-related merchandise sales. All over social media there were fans posting their pictures at the game with their Kelce merchandise on and supporting their favorite singer’s new boy toy. So much money was brought in by these jersey and merchandise sales, even though Travis doesn’t get 100% of the money made off of those sales. The NFL definitely will try to milk this whole Travis and Taylor saga with possibly making some new merchandise that has something to do with the two celebrities, so fans of both sides could rock some new merch to support the two.

Taylor Swift’s presence extended benefits not only to Kelce but also to the NFL itself. Swift-related posts from the league on social media made up 7% of total content and generated an amazing 109 million engagements. Swift’s visit was valued around $37 million altogether, according to Apex Marketing, showing how valuable she could be for the NFL. Swift’s appearance at the Chiefs-Jets Sunday Night Football game will significantly increase the show’s television audience, furthering her influence on the NFL.

Taylor goes back on her Era’s tour in late October, as she is traveling out of the United States. I could only imagine that up until she has to go back on her tour, she is going to be at every Chiefs game supporting and cheering on Travis and the Chiefs. This would be huge for the Chiefs, Travis, and the NFL as a whole. As long as Taylor is going to these games and showing her face, they are gaining so many more fans and gaining viewership and revenue. Beyond the short-term financial benefits, Kelce’s relationship with Swift might draw a new audience, boosting his appeal and extending his influence both within and outside the NFL.
